This route is a gradual downhill for most of the way and features three very pretty lakes, two of which can be circled by bicycle without too much trouble. It’s a great break from the main road that can get quite packed with cars on weekends and holidays.

Having decided to take the Matsumoto option on this particular trip, I cycled up for a short distance to climb out of the valley and then due south along the snow-covered mountains. Occasionally there would be a traditional thatch-roof house decorated by snowy peaks and cherry blossoms in full bloom.
