Getaway number two takes you to Nagano, site of the 1998 Winter Olympics. The route isn’t quite as pretty as the Matsumoto option, but it has its moments. Here you’re just leaving Hakuba to head eastward toward Nagano on local Route 33.

There are several tunnels along the route, but unfortunately only the first one offers a viable detour (on a road also numbered Route 33). This road leads over a short pass; it’s quite a climb near the end, but at least it enables you to avoid a two-kilometer-long tunnel.
