Since I spent so much effort warning you about the tunnels, the next five or six photos will attempt to show you how nice even this part of the route can be. Good weather helps; when I travel, I try to judge the departure date based on the weather more than anything else. On this occasion I hit the jackpot: absolutely spectacular weather for most of the day.

For most of the early part of the trip, the road follows a small river. That’s generally an indication of a level climb, but not always, as this photo may show.
