This part of Shikoku is a major center for aquaculture, and one of the three major areas for pearl cultivation in Japan. At the time that I took this photo, I wasn't sure what was being cultivated, but now I recognize it immediately as a pearl farm, a common sight along this coast. Directly beneath the floats are racks that contain row upon row of oysters.

Although mostly benign, certain sections of this coast are as rugged as anything you'll find anywhere in Japan. This photo is backlit, but if anything in proper light it's even more spectacular.
