As you near Uwajima, you find quiet bays like this one; note the tiny shrine on the offshore island in the foreground. This is just south of Uwajima.

The city of Uwajima is dominated by the castle on a large hillock in the city center. In contrast to Kochi, Uwajima seems more like a town than a city - small and intimate, but with many of the conveniences of a large city (as opposed to many regional cities which are big and sprawling without the big-city amenities to compensate). Cyclists planning to stay at the youth hostel should note that it involves a 100m climb up a hill - but a park near the hostel offers a lovely view of the castle hill (seen here at night). Uwajima also has great restaurants with delicious seafood at bargain prices. All in all, this is probably my favorite city on Shikoku.
