Since I’d decided to stay at the youth hostel in Ozu (and add 20 km to my trip each way), I spent some time on the afternoon before departure seeing the castle next door. Although the castle dates back to the 1300s, the reconstructed version is brand-new (completed in 2004). It does have one claim to fame: on the grounds is Japan’s largest well at 3.8 m diameter.

Early the next morning, I set off along the mostly level road toward the coast.
