This photo is typical of the northern coast: lower elevations than the ridge road and a much more meandering route that travels through country that is very sparsely populated (in terms of both houses and vehicles on the road).

And suddenly you think: what happened to that two-lane highway? As you see here, in some places it narrows back to a single lane or less, particularly when the route turns inland.
