Among mountain routes, this one is fairly unique in that, after the initial far-off view, it doesn’t really show you much of the surrounding mountains until the very end. Here is a rare peek at the peaks - though fairly low-level ones, as you can tell from the lack of snow. The almost total lack of mountain views makes the one at the very end all the more impressive.

And here’s the sign announcing that you’re in Hakuba! Or rather the Hakuba city (or in this case town) limits. What it doesn’t mention is that you have probably another 10 - 20 kilometers to cycle before arriving in downtown Hakuba. When I see these signs on a long trip, I’m torn between feeling relief at knowing the end is in sight and feeling depressed because I know how long the distance is between the initial sign and where I’m actually trying to go.
