Just before I reached Shiretoko Shari, the terminus of the train line, I turned off the main highway to enjoy a bit of peaceful rolling hill and farm country near Yamabetsu Station.

Another reason to take back roads: sometimes you solve mysteries. If I’m not mistaken, this is the contraption that makes all of those straw barrels we’ve been seeing. No idea how it works, though.
